Jan Cervinka lived with his wife Vera Patkova in the mountains of Czech Republic until his death in April 2025. Like Edmund Hillary, he was a beekeeper, every year supplying family and friends with jars of honey. Around him gathered s a community of friends - many of whom dated back to his days when he was an active climber and a leader of the local climbing club, which he founded in the small town of Vrchlabi, where he moved with his family in the wake of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
